MBA recruitment prospects: CareerMee.com sees the silver lining

Despite the poor economic climate, CareerMee.com identifies three comforting trends in the MBA job market.

BERLIN, GERMANY, April 24, 2009 /Employment - Careers PR News/ -- MBA employers may have curtailed their campus recruitment activities, but there are still opportunities in traditional sectors, and the downturn has further opened a few other, less familiar doors.

"Companies as large as Allianz are a continuous source of opportunities for fresh talent," Karolina Karr, Head of Recruiting at Allianz global headquarters (www.allianz.jobs), said.

"Target groups such as actuaries and distribution specialists are never easy to come by and finding the perfect candidate remains our biggest challenge."

Allianz recently joined joined over 60 major international companies that are sourcing leadership talent at CareerMee.com, an MBA recruiting platform that launched in January.

Three Comforting Trends

Although the recession means starting salaries might be lower than graduates' expected at the beginning of their MBA, this lower market price is driving some key recruitment trends that work in their favour:

1. Downsizing is the word of the day, but an upshot is that some companies are upgrading their workforce to capitalise on the economic climate. By cutting more unproductive staff than necessary, these companies are able to 'up-skill' at the currently lower market price for MBAs.

"Organisations are taking this opportunity to upgrade their talent," Seymour Adler, senior vice-president at Aon Consulting recently said.

"They recognise that there are better people out there so they 'over-correct' on the downside to take advantage."

2. Less traditional sectors are also recruiting MBAs to take advantage of the recession, notably clean technology, government and non-profit organisations. Although they can't offer the six-figure salary plus bonus of Wall Street MBA recruiters two years ago, they can offer stable and socially rewarding career options.

3. Those with other language abilities also have the option of seeking employment opportunities in emerging markets that haven't been hit quite as hard by the economic downturn, such as India or China.

"The India story is very much intact," Dinesh Mirchandani, president of Boyden India, recently said.

"What has been driving matters along in the last two years is not only the global economy, but domestic demand, and this domestic demand is still vibrant in terms of goods and services."

CareerMee.com has enjoyed a strong demand for its services, despite launching into the worst economic climate of several decades.

"It may not seem like the best time to launch any kind of job finding service, but it's now more than ever that having the right person in the right job really counts," Florian Behn, CEO and co-founder of CareerMee.com said.

"Smart employers know that now is the time to make sure you have the right team, so that when the recession eventually ends, you have a crucial edge over your competition."
