Suzanne Messina Forges Ahead with Mission to "Listen to Constituents and Put their Issues Forward" in Broome County
Suzanne Messina discusses her roles as a politician and teacher with Cambridge Who's Who
BINGHAMTON, NY, June 18, 2010 /Employment - Careers PR News/ --"Education is public service and public service is education," philosophized Suzanne Gorman Messina during a recorded interview with Cambridge Who's Who. Both educator at the Broome-Tioga BOCES EverTech High School and active member of the County Legislature since 2008, she is living proof that serving the government involves more than playing politics. Rather, she noted, it should be a continual effort to "move things in a positive direction...listen to constituents and put their issues forward to be solved."
Some might wonder how the Vestal resident has time to pursue a full-time career as a politician while enjoying a fruitful occupation in education. Specializing in employment skill development and financial management, Ms. Messina instructs ninth- through twelfth-grade students in the fields of business. She helps them to write resumes, hone interview skills, research companies and perform other job-related functions. And at the core of her teachings, there exists an emphasis on communication. "We talk, every single day, about the fact that attitude is everything—how you talk to people, how you treat people...Communication skills are the number one reason [for] why people get jobs and the number one reason [for] why people lose jobs. It's all about attitude." Among other things, this is true in both the political and educational realms. Periodically, Ms. Messina also lectures social studies classes on voting, county government operations and information technology usage.
In fact, Ms. Messina finds that her two worlds overlap quite a bit—each enhancing, rather than detracting from, her ability to perform the other. To her classroom, she brings a business savvy that has been uniquely cultivated over the course of her prodigious political career. (This year alone will find Ms. Messina on several public committees including: Education, Culture & Recreation, Human Services, Public Safety & Emergency Services, and Transportation & Rural Development.) To her work in public service, she offers the patience and listening skills of a teacher.
As both a teacher and as a public figure, the determinations of Suzanne Messina are clear. "The legacy that I would like to leave is...as someone who is honest and fair...I would like to be remembered for doing the right thing." Demonstrating true commitment to the improvement of Broome County through "creative job-growth opportunities," increased government efficiency and alternate energy solutions, Ms. Messina is sure to leave a footprint in Upstate New York that will not soon be forgotten.
Suzanne Gorman Messina holds a master of education in counselor education from The Citadel School of Education and has completed coursework at SUNY College at Oneonta. She serves both as county historian and immigration and legislation officer for the Broome County Division (I) of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. She has maintained active affiliation with The Democratic Party for over 20 years. Sue and husband, Barry, live in Vestal and have two grown children, Morgan and Chris.
